Horse Blanket: A Staple When Caring for
Horses
A horse
blanket is a piece of fabric used to cover a horse to keep it warm and protect it from the
elements, like the wind. Usually used on thorough breeds, these blankets are tailored to fit each individual horse. It usually covers the chest to the
rump, with a strap and buckle to secure the blanket on the horse’s back. Although some designs are made to fit over
the horse’s head, the most common design is that which features the buckle and strap, as this type of blanket is
easier to put on and take off.
The practical use of these blankets, as mentioned, is to keep
the horse warm while it is out of its stall and in the pasture. These blankets may also be used to keep the horse’s
hair short. This is mainly for show purposes, as horses that are wrapped in the blanket will not grow their thick,
winter coats.
Horse blankets are typically made from the same materials used
to make winter coats designed for humans. During the summer, however, the blankets are much thinner and serve the
purpose of warding off flies and maintaining the sheen and luster of the coat. These summer blankets are usually
made of lighter material, such as nylon or some synthetic fiber. This allows the horses body to “breathe.” Just as
humans have thick coats in the winter and windbreakers in spring and autumn, horses too have blankets to suit the
particular season.
There are several kinds of horse blankets that do not depend on
the weather. A saddle blanket is one such kind of horse blanket. These blankets usually don’t cover the entire
horse’s body. They are there to protect the back of the horse from chaffing and developing calluses from the
saddle. Another kind of blanket is called a cooler or a mantle. The primary purpose of a cooler is to slowly cool
down the horse after a particularly intense work out. These blankets keep the horse warm while still allowing
enough air to circulate and bring the core temperature of the horse down to a relaxed state. These types of horse
blankets are usually made of synthetic fleece or woven cotton to allow for best air circulation. Coolers have a
primary purpose of keeping the horse warm and avoid muscle stiffening and injuries associated with muscle
stiffening.
A horse blanket is a practical commodity in the maintenance and
care for horses. They prevent injuries, keep the horse’s coat nice and clean, and keep away parasites. Have some
horse blankets handy and you’re well on your way to providing your horse with the care he needs.
