Care of the Wool Blanket
What kind of blankets do you sleep with? Many people today use different
coverings on their beds to keep them warm. There are duvets, which have become popular again, and they do keep you
warm. But some people find them too heavy to sleep with. Others have stuck with the old-fashioned
wool blanket. They tend to be lightweight but
warm.
The only difference is that with a duvet you
take off the cover and throw it into the washer and then the dryer. Later the same day its back on the bed or you
have a second cover you substitute while he first one is getting washed. You have to care for your wool blanket a
little differently.
First read the tags before you decide to do
anything. Most times a wool blanket will need to be dry-cleaned. If this is what the tag says you must dry clean
it, do not try to wash this blanket. Even though it is an inconvenience to have to bundle it up and take it to the
dry cleaners and then wait a few days to get your wool blanket back at least you will know it will be properly
cleaned, it won’t shrink and you will have it back ready to put on your bed good as new. It is probably a good idea
to clean it in the summer when you have taken it off the bed for the warm weather. If you haven’t this is still the
best time to remove it for cleaning so it is not absent during the colder months.
If the tag on your wool blanket says you can
wash it by using your washing machine then wash it in cold water only. Then lay it out flat to dry out. This will
prevent shrinkage. The last thing you want is for your favorite wool blanket to no longer be able to cover your bed
because of improper care.
